Which Employment Based Green Card Should You Apply for: A Comprehensive Guide to Employment Based Immigration
Every year about 140,000 employment-based immigrant green cards are made available to qualified applicants. Employment based immigrant visas are divided into five preference categories. In order to be eligible for one, you must fit within one of the five categories. There are five categories of employment based visas.

Employment First Preference (E1): This is for people with extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics, outstanding professors and researchers with at least three years experience, and multinational managers and executives who have been employed for at least one of the three preceding years by overseas affiliate, parent, subsidiary, or branch of the US employer.

Employment Second Preference (E2): For professionals holding an advanced degree or baccalaureate degree and have at least five years experiences and people with exceptional ability in the sciences, arts or business.

Employment Third Preference (E3): For skilled workers whose jobs require a minimum of two years training or work experience, professionals that require at least a baccalaureate degree, and people capable of filling positions that require less than two years training or experience.

Employment Forth Preference (E4): Includes but is not limited to certain religious workers, employees of the US Foreign Service posts, retired employees of international organizations, and noncitizen minors who are wards of US courts.

Employment Fifth Preference (E5): For foreign investors in a new commercial enterprises in the US which provide jobs.
